# TrendsConnector

Last updated: 2026-10-17

> TrendsConnector is an MCP server and REST API for live trend data across search, social, commerce, news, and developer platforms (Google Search/Images/News/Shopping, YouTube, TikTok, Reddit, Amazon, Wikipedia, news volume/sentiment, app downloads/rankings, npm, PyPI (python), Steam, plus 24 live feeds). ~5 years of weekly history where available. One account covers MCP and REST.

Two MCP hosts (not interchangeable):
- `https://api.trendsconnector.com/mcp` — Bearer API key (Cursor, VS Code, Claude Desktop, Claude Code, most clients)
- `https://trendsconnector.com/mcp` — OAuth 2.0 for Claude.ai Connectors only (do not “correct” this to api.)

- REST: `POST https://api.trendsconnector.com/api` with `Authorization: Bearer <key>` (the `Bearer ` prefix is optional; the bare key works too)
- Free: 100 requests/month, no credit card
- Paid: Starter $19/mo (1,000 req), Pro $49/mo (5,000), Business $199/mo (25,000). Annual saves 20%.

## MCP tools

Three tools. Human titles and wire names:

| MCP tool name | Title | REST `mode` | What it returns |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `get_time_series` | Get Time Series | `get_time_series` (aliases: `get_trends`, `trends`, `time_series`, `lookup`) | ~5 years weekly series for one source + keyword |
| `get_growth` | Get Growth | `get_growth` (alias: `growth`) | % change over one or more periods |
| `get_top_trends` | Get Top Trends | `get_top_trends` (alias: `top_trends`) | Live ranked feed (no keyword) |

Canonical names match the MCP tools. Prefer `get_time_series` in examples on both REST and MCP. Tools are read-only.

## Get an API key

1. Open [Account](https://trendsconnector.com/account).
2. Enter your email and submit. No credit card, no password.
3. Enter the 8-digit code we email you (subject "Your authentication code").
4. Your key is then revealed on the page; it was also emailed to you (format `tmcp_live_…`).
5. Replace `YOUR_API_KEY` in the client configs below with that key.
6. Use it as `Authorization: Bearer <key>` for REST and for MCP on `api.trendsconnector.com`.

Claude.ai Connectors use OAuth against `www.trendsmcp.ai/mcp` — no API key in that connector config.

## Setup

Primary UI (MCP + REST): [Docs → Connect](https://trendsconnector.com/docs#connect)

### Claude (claude.ai — OAuth connector, recommended)
Uses the **www** OAuth endpoint, not api.
Claude.ai → Settings → Customize → Connectors → Add custom connector
- Name: TrendsConnector
- Server URL: `https://trendsconnector.com/mcp` (OAuth — intentional; different from api.)
Claude handles OAuth automatically — no API key in the connector config.
Deep link: `https://claude.ai/customize/connectors?modal=add-custom-connector&connectorName=TrendsConnector&connectorUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.trendsmcp.ai%2Fmcp`
- [MCP setup for Claude](https://trendsconnector.com/for-claude): Desktop, claude.ai connector, and Claude Code

### Claude Desktop
User → Settings → Developer → Edit Config — add inside `mcpServers` (Bearer on **api**)
```json
"trends-mcp": {
  "command": "npx",
  "args": ["-y", "mcp-remote", "https://api.trendsconnector.com/mcp", "--header", "Authorization:${AUTH_HEADER}"],
  "env": { "AUTH_HEADER": "Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" }
}
```
Mac: `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json`
Windows: `%APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json`
Fully quit and restart Claude Desktop after saving.

### Claude Code (CLI)
```
claude mcp add --transport http trends-mcp https://api.trendsconnector.com/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"
```

### Cursor
Cursor Settings → Tools & MCP → Add a Custom MCP Server (or use the Add to Cursor deep link on docs)
```json
"trends-mcp": {
  "url": "https://api.trendsconnector.com/mcp",
  "transport": "http",
  "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" }
}
```
Mac/Linux: `~/.cursor/mcp.json` — Windows: `%USERPROFILE%\.cursor\mcp.json`
- [MCP setup for Cursor](https://trendsconnector.com/for-cursor)

### Windsurf
Cascade MCP panel → Configure / Add custom server (or Command Palette → `Windsurf: Configure MCP Servers`).
Windsurf remote HTTP uses `serverUrl` (not Cursor’s `url` + `transport`).
```json
"trends-mcp": {
  "serverUrl": "https://api.trendsconnector.com/mcp",
  "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" }
}
```
Mac/Linux: `~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json`
Windows: `%USERPROFILE%\.codeium\windsurf\mcp_config.json`
- [MCP setup for Windsurf](https://trendsconnector.com/for-windsurf)

### VS Code
Use the Add to VS Code install button on docs, or paste into `.vscode/mcp.json` inside `servers` (Command Palette → `MCP: Add Server`):
```json
"trends-mcp": {
  "type": "http",
  "url": "https://api.trendsconnector.com/mcp",
  "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" }
}
```
- [MCP setup for VS Code](https://trendsconnector.com/for-vs-code)

### Cline (VS Code extension)
MCP Servers tab → Remote Server → paste URL and header
```json
"trends-mcp": {
  "url": "https://api.trendsconnector.com/mcp",
  "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" }
}
```
- [MCP setup for Cline](https://trendsconnector.com/for-cline)

### GitHub Copilot
VS Code Command Palette → MCP: Add Server → paste URL and header
- [MCP setup for GitHub Copilot](https://trendsconnector.com/for-copilot)

### Raycast
Raycast Settings → Extensions → MCP → Add Server → HTTP → paste URL and header
- [MCP setup for Raycast](https://trendsconnector.com/for-raycast)

### ChatGPT (OpenAI)
ChatGPT Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector → paste MCP URL (`https://api.trendsconnector.com/mcp` with your key, or follow the setup page)
- [MCP setup for ChatGPT](https://trendsconnector.com/for-chatgpt)

### n8n
HTTP Request node or MCP Community node → paste URL and Bearer token
- [TrendsConnector with n8n](https://trendsconnector.com/docs)

### Make (Integromat)
HTTP module → POST https://api.trendsconnector.com/api → Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY
- [TrendsConnector with Make](https://trendsconnector.com/docs)

### Zapier
Webhooks by Zapier → POST https://api.trendsconnector.com/api → Authorization header
- [TrendsConnector with Zapier](https://trendsconnector.com/docs)

### LangChain
```python
from langchain_mcp_adapters.client import MultiServerMCPClient
client = MultiServerMCPClient({"trends-mcp": {"url": "https://api.trendsconnector.com/mcp", "transport": "streamable_http", "headers": {"Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_API_KEY"}}})
```
- [TrendsConnector with LangChain](https://trendsconnector.com/docs)

## Authentication

- REST + most MCP clients: `Authorization: Bearer <key>` against `api.trendsconnector.com` (the `Bearer ` prefix is optional; the bare key works too)
- Claude.ai Connectors: OAuth 2.0 against `www.trendsmcp.ai/mcp` (consent flow; no Bearer key in connector config)
Never expose your API key in client-side code or public repositories.

## Pricing

| Plan | Monthly requests | Price |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Free | 100 / month | $0 |
| Starter | 1,000 / month | $19 / month |
| Pro | 5,000 / month | $49 / month |
| Business | 25,000 / month | $199 / month |

Annual billing saves 20%. Same sources on every plan. Details: [Pricing](https://trendsconnector.com/#pricing)

## What counts as a request

Only successful (2xx) calls count against the monthly quota; failed requests are free.

- `get_trends` / `get_time_series`: 1 source + keyword per call = 1 request
- `get_growth`: 1 source + keyword per call = 1 request (all `percent_growth` periods in that call included)
- `get_top_trends`: MCP costs 1 credit per 10 requested rows (max 10 credits per call); REST is 1 request per call

## Data Sources

## API Reference

All requests go to POST https://api.trendsconnector.com/api. Pick the operation with the mode field in the JSON body:

| mode | What it returns | Required fields |
|--------------------|-----------------------------------------|--------------------------------------------------------------|
| get_time_series    | ~5 years of weekly points for a keyword | source, keyword                                              |
| get_growth         | % change over one or more periods       | source, keyword (percent_growth optional, defaults to ["12M"]) |
| get_top_trends | Live ranked leaderboard for a feed | type (limit, category, sort, window, country optional) |

Canonical mode names match the MCP tools. Aliases: get_trends, trends, time_series, and lookup all mean get_time_series; growth means get_growth; top_trends means get_top_trends. Prefer the canonical names everywhere.

### get_time_series (REST + MCP)

Returns a full historical time series for a keyword from a single source. Approximately 5 years of weekly data. Specify one source per request.

Request body:
- mode (string, required): "get_time_series" (aliases: "get_trends", "trends", "time_series", "lookup")
- source (string, required): one source per request
- keyword (string, required)

Response fields (array of data points):
- date (string): ISO 8601 e.g. "2026-03-21"
- value (number): trend score 0–100
- volume (number|null): absolute volume where available
- keyword (string)
- source (string)

Example:
```json
[{"date": "2026-03-21", "value": 47, "volume": 25853617, "keyword": "bitcoin", "source": "google search"}]
```

### get_growth (MCP + REST)

Calculates point-to-point percentage growth over one or more time windows. Supports window strings or, on REST only, exact custom date pairs. Pass one source or a comma-separated list (e.g. "amazon, tiktok, youtube"). One request per source + keyword regardless of how many periods are in percent_growth.

Request body:
- mode (string, required): "get_growth" (alias: "growth")
- source (string, required): one source or comma-separated list
- keyword (string, required)
- percent_growth (array, optional): window strings or, on REST only, custom date objects; defaults to ["12M"]. window is accepted as a REST alias.

Growth windows: any whole number plus a D, W, M, or Y suffix, up to 5 years (e.g. 7D, 17D, 45D, 3M, 18M, 2Y), plus MTD, QTD, and YTD. Common examples: 7D 14D 30D 1M 2M 3M 6M 9M 12M 1Y 18M 24M 2Y 36M 3Y 48M 60M 5Y MTD QTD YTD

Custom date range object (REST only; MCP accepts the string windows): {"name": "optional label", "recent": "YYYY-MM-DD", "baseline": "YYYY-MM-DD"}

Response fields:
- search_term, data_source
- results (array, one per period): period, growth (%), direction, recent_date, baseline_date, recent_value, baseline_value, volume_available, recent_volume, baseline_volume, volume_growth
- metadata: total_data_points, calculations_completed, all_successful

Example:
```json
{"mode": "get_growth", "source": "google search", "keyword": "nike", "percent_growth": ["12M", "3M", "YTD"]}
```
```json
{
  "search_term": "nike", "data_source": "google search",
  "results": [{"period": "12M", "growth": -12.31, "direction": "decrease",
    "recent_date": "2026-03-21", "baseline_date": "2025-03-22",
    "recent_value": 57, "baseline_value": 65,
    "volume_available": true, "recent_volume": 24158298, "baseline_volume": 27548936, "volume_growth": -12.31}],
  "metadata": {"total_data_points": 261, "calculations_completed": 1, "all_successful": true}
}
```

### get_top_trends (MCP + REST)

Returns ranked items from live platform feeds. type is required on both REST and MCP (one feed per call); omitting it returns a 400 missing_parameter error.

Request body:
- mode (string, required): "get_top_trends" (alias: "top_trends")
- type (string, required): feed name — required on both REST and MCP
- category (string): required for Amazon Best Sellers by Category, Google Trends by Category, Top Websites, Substack by Category, and TikTok Trending Hashtags by Category (case-insensitive). Official names are on /data-sources.
- sort (string, optional): "rank" (default) returns the current board; "rank_change" returns the biggest climbers vs a baseline snapshot
- window (string, optional, only with sort="rank_change"): "1d", "3d", "7d", "14d", or "30d" (default). Short windows only have baselines on daily feeds; slower feeds return a note pointing to a longer window
- country (string, optional): ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 (US, GB, JP). Aliases like USA or United States resolve to US. Omit for the default US board. Only for Google Trends, Google Trends by Category, YouTube Trending, TikTok Trending Hashtags, TikTok Trending Hashtags by Category, and X (Twitter) Trending. If that board is not in the database yet, the handler fetches it live.
- limit (integer, default 25): max items per feed, up to 200. Free plan boards return the top 10 only.
- offset (integer, default 0): pagination. Pinned to 0 on the Free plan; pagination is a paid feature.

Example:
```json
{"mode": "get_top_trends", "type": "Google Trends", "limit": 10}
{"mode": "get_top_trends", "type": "Google Trends by Category", "category": "Games", "limit": 10}
 "type": "Amazon Best Sellers by Category", "category": "Toys Games",
 "sort": "rank_change", "window": "7d", "limit": 10, "count": 10,
 "data": [{"rank": 4, "keyword": "example toy", "prev_rank": 31, "rank_change": 27, "category_path": "Toys Games"}]}
```

With sort="rank_change", rows are objects with rank, keyword, prev_rank, and rank_change (positions climbed). If the feed has no baseline snapshot within tolerance of the requested window (e.g. monthly Top Websites with "7d"), or the board turned over completely versus the baseline, the response returns count 0 with a note explaining why and what to do next.

## Errors

The REST transport always returns HTTP 200. The real outcome is in the payload envelope: {"statusCode": <int>, "body": <json string>}. Check statusCode, then parse body. Error bodies carry one of these codes:

| Error code               | Meaning                                                                  |
|--------------------------|--------------------------------------------------------------------------|
| missing_parameter | Required field missing from the request body (e.g. type on get_top_trends) |
| invalid_source           | Unrecognized source value                                                |
| invalid_mode             | Unrecognized mode value                                                  |
| invalid_request | Malformed body or invalid parameter combination |
| no_data                  | No data matched this keyword/source                                      |
| source_unavailable | The upstream source could not be reached; retry later |
| growth_calculation_failed | Growth could not be computed for the requested window |
| internal_error | Unexpected server error; the body includes a request_id to quote when contacting support |

On MCP, tool failures set isError=true on the tool result.

Error envelope: {"statusCode": 400, "body": "{"error": "missing_parameter", "message": "The 'type' parameter is required"}"}
